This lesson will be introducing the lithosphere as a foundation to understanding rock types within the continental and oceanic crusts.
Understanding the lithosphere is important because it explains where and under what conditions rocks form. Different parts of the lithosphere have different temperatures, pressures, and magma sources, which control how rocks cool and crystallize. These conditions determine a rock’s texture, chemical composition, and mineral composition. Without this context, rock characteristics cannot be logically explained.
